Embracing the Ebb and Flow of Your Purposeful Life


We often look at the world through a curated lens, seeing others as "perfectly put-together" or perpetually "on." But here is a truth we must hold close: emotional ebbs and flows are not a sign of failure; they are a requirement of a life well-lived.

 

Even for those who seem to have it all figured out, the journey isn't a straight line upward—it’s a heartbeat. If your heart is beating, there will be peaks and there will be valleys. Truthfully, I’m writing these words today as much for myself as I am for you. I’m currently in a season of waiting for my own big plans to catch up to my vision. I have to intentionally choose to lean into these strategies when my own momentum feels like it’s hit a lull.

 


Why the "Lows" Happen (Even When Life is Good)

It can be jarring to feel a slump when, externally, every box is checked. Research in psychology often points to several reasons for these "unexplained" dips:

 

Arrival Fallacy: We often think reaching a goal will bring permanent happiness. When we hit a milestone and the "high" fades, the brain experiences a natural dip in dopamine as it recalibrates.

 

The Creative Void: After a period of high output or "doing," the soul requires a fallow season. Much like a field that needs to rest to remain fertile, our energy cycles naturally move from high-engagement to deep-restoration.

 

Expansion Friction: When you are growing, you are constantly pushing against the edges of your comfort zone. That friction can feel like fatigue or doubt, but it is actually the sensation of your life getting bigger.

 

Navigating the "Speed of the Plan"

One of the most common triggers for a "down" cycle is the gap between our vision and our current reality. When plans feel stagnant, the mind starts to whisper: Is this working? Am I on the right track?

 

Successful navigation of these moments involves shifting from outcome-fixation to alignment-trust. Recognizing that "the how" and "the when" are often out of our hands allows us to return to "the why." If your core values are still guiding your actions, you are on the right track—even if the train is currently stopped at a station for maintenance.

 

The Power of Anticipation: A Quick Shift

Sometimes, the "low" isn't about what is happening, but what isn't happening. When our calendars are filled only with obligations and lack "pockets of joy," our energy begins to drain.

 

One of the fastest ways to turn your energy around is the Anticipation Strategy.

 

The Strategy: Plan something to look forward to—immediately. It doesn't have to be a grand international voyage. It can be a mountain hike with your "tribe," a sound therapy session, or a simple coffee date with a friend who fills your cup.

 

Science shows that the act of planning an event releases almost as much dopamine as the event itself. By putting a "joy marker" on your calendar, you give your brain a reason to shift back into a state of hopeful expectation.

 

Strategies to Honor the Cycle

To manage the natural fluctuations of a month or a year, try these shifts in perspective:

 

Acknowledge, Don't Analyze: When a low hits, stop asking "Why is this happening?" and start saying "This is happening." By removing the judgment, you remove the power the low has over you.

 

Short Bursts of Movement: When energy is heavy, don't overcommit. A 15-minute "Sacred Start" involving a few kettlebell swings or a brisk walk can shift your physiology enough to clear the mental fog.

 

Seek Your Sisterhood: We aren't meant to carry the weight of our doubts alone. Reach out to your community. Often, hearing a "Me too" from a woman you admire is the exact medicine needed to realize you aren't "off track"—you’re just human.

 

The Big Picture

Expect the ebbs. They are the moments where your next great idea is currently "under construction." See the "down" times not as a detour, but as the foundation for your next "up."

 

Keep going, keep dreaming, and remember: your purpose is not a destination you reach, but the energy you bring to the journey—valleys and all.
